Astigmatism Surgery
Jul 29
Whether an operation will help the treatment for astigmatism – the cost of surgery often becomes the main obstacle to its implementation. But this is not the important matter when making a decision comparing to efficiency of the eye procedure. For example, even a very popular modern method of improving eyesight – laser correction, according to the results of research by American scientists, cannot fully protect a patient, guarantee his complete deliverance from glasses and lenses for the entire postoperative period. Each patient has to understand that the clinical case varies per individual and the elimination of the defect also requires such an approach.
When is astigmatism surgery unavoidable?
It is a mistake to believe that astigmatism can be cured. The disease is treated, but in this case we are talking about an anomaly. Conservative and surgical methods can only correct this defect. For medical reasons, there are several types of operations:
- Thermokeratocoagulation. Is made when hyperopic anomaly occurs. Held thermal effects (cauterization) on the surface of the cornea to correct it
- Keratotomy. Perform an axial undercut of the protective layer of the cornea, opening the valve and making cuts on it in the form of an arc. Effective in correcting vision up to 4 optical units
- Coagulation by laser. Corneal curvature correction occurs during cauterization with a powerful narrowly directed light beam
- Treatment with a type of ultraviolet chemical laser – excimer. Achieved evaporation from the top layer of the cornea epithelium of a predetermined thickness.
Astigmatism surgery is forbidden in these cases:
- Age restrictions: the patient is under 18 years old
- Sick with one eye
- Special requirements for visual acuity, speed of reaction to the image under professional loads
- Infectious and mental illness
- The presence of diseases, “fellow travelers”: glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment, and keratototonus
- Breastfeeding and pregnancy
- Vascular diseases and problems of the endocrine system
- Oncology
- Exacerbation of chronic, inflammatory processes
- Diagnosis of HIV infection.
