A Brief Insight to Preventive Dental Care

We all know the adage “that a stitch in time saves nine”, this is also applicable when we want to ensure good dental
health and maintain your healthy smile.

Preventive dental can be described as certain actions that firstly promotes oral health and secondly prevents certain dental issues from occurring. In other words it boils down to, as caring for your mouth and ensuring your smile. The basis of preventive dental care is the execution of certain actions on a regular basis by you and your dentist. This actions happens at two locations, at home and at the dentist’s office. There is a great emphasis on having a healthy lifestyle which encompasses your total body, this also includes having a healthy mouth.

Many people and in particular children fears/dreads a visit to the dentist’s chair but this shouldn’t be the case if
we do the following on a regular basis at home:

    • Brushing your teeth twice a day, in the morning and before you retire to bed. Teach your children to do the same. Use toothpaste and brushes that are approved by the ADA.
    • Floss your teeth daily.
    • Make use of a mouthwash to clean your whole mouth.
    • Avoid or stay away from drinks and foods with a very high sugar content. The sugars build up on your teeth and are one off the main reasons for cavities and health issues of your teeth.
  • Eat healthy food that will promote good mouth health.

Visits to the dentist is unavoidable to ensure preventative dental health, your dentist should be visited for the following action on a regular basis. It is recommended every 6 months.

  • A proper cleaning of your teeth.
  • Inspecting your mouth and gums, to ensure there is no decay or disease present.
  • Your dentist will inspect your tongue and mouth, to ensure there is no problems.
  • Make sure there is no signs of oral cancer.
  • If necessary provide, fluoride treatment or any other treatment needed.

Preventive is very important for various reasons but will help to ensure that your healthy mouth supports your total health. The following is why it must be done:

  • It saves you money and your insurance will cover it.
  • It helps to ensure the health of your mouth and prevents tooth decay and gum disease.
  • It prevents pain.
