Gingivitis vs. Healthy Gums

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is as a result of inflammation of the tissues that surround and support the teeth. It is a very common gum disease that differs in severity and is often a result of poor dental hygiene. Symptoms often include bleeding of the gums during brushing or flossing and bad breath. Plaque buildup at the gum line is the direct cause of gingivitis and if left untreated, gingivitis can lead to periodontitis and might result in permanent damage to the teeth and jaw.

Since gingivitis can be a mild form of gum disease, individuals might not be aware that they have the condition. However, proper oral care and habits, regular brushing and flossing, and having dental checkups can help prevent gingivitis. Gingivitis is not the same as periododontis – gingivitis is inflammation of the guys around the teeth while periododontis involves an inflamed or infected bone below the gums – although there are instances when an individual can be affected by both.

Healthy Gums

It is impossible to have healthy teeth if your gums are unhealthy. Your gums are what safeguard the attachment of the teeth to your jawbone.

Ways to ensure healthy gums

Good over-all dental and oral habits

Brushing your teeth after each meal or at least twice a day will reduce plaque formation if it’s done the right way. Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles that will not be too harsh to the teeth and with round edges to clean even those hard-to-reach areas in your mouth. There is toothpaste today that already have active whiteners and mouthwash.

Vitamins and Diet

Vitamin C helps to build healthy gums. Your body system doesn’t manufacture its own Vitamin C, so a daily oral dose is necessary. A diet rich in Vitamin C will help in maintaining healthy gums.

An appointment with a dentist

Having enough knowledge to recognize not just how a healthy gum looks but also the symptoms of early or advanced gum disease is beneficial. A regular visit to a dentist will ensure that teeth and gums receive the most appropriate dental care.
