Treatment for an avulsed tooth

In many cases like accidents or while playing games, the tooth is completely knocked out of its socket due to impact or a high amount of force being applied. The tooth which is knocked out is called an avulsed tooth, and this condition is one of few emergency conditions. The tooth which is avulsed can be fixed back in the mouth. However, some precautions have to be taken before going to a dental emergency clinic to ensure that the tooth can be reused again. It is necessary to educate healthcare professionals on the precautions to be taken so that the tooth can be fixed again.

Dentists will only replant permanent teeth. They will not replant primary teeth in children since new teeth will be formed. It is important to keep the patient calm. The broken tooth should be handled by the white part, the crown, the roots of the tooth should not be touched. If possible, the avulsed tooth should be repositioned in the mouth and kept in place by biting, till a dentist is contacted. If the tooth cannot be re-positioned, it should be washed and kept in the mouth. The patient may swallow the tooth, in which case, it can be placed in fluid similar to the mouth, like milk or saline water.

The dentist will examine the avulsed tooth and take suitable action depending on whether the tooth has an open apex or closed apex. In all cases, the tooth should be cleaned, and lacerations should be sutured. A flexible splint avulsed toothshould be used to fix the tooth to its original position. Depending on the period after which the tooth is out of the mouth, the re-positioned tooth should be put under observation by the dentist. The patient should only eat soft food, and a soft brush should be used for the teeth. After a few weeks, a root canal should be carried out so that the patient can use the tooth in the future. The dentist should check the tooth regularly.
